At the Sanctuary

When you walk through the gate into Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary, you’re greeted by wagging tails. Twenty senior dogs, three horses and a large variety of poultry live in the peaceful, ecologically-balanced four-acre sanctuary. The main house has gone to the dogs. The little ones have their own indoor area, sun porch and covered yard, while the big dogs enjoy freedom to roam throughout the securely fenced grounds or rest in comfy dog beds on their own porch. At night, they come inside to sleep in the warm, safe haven of the Angel Room.

Three beautiful senior horses, Bo, Loki and Taj, enjoy a large, fenced exercise area and barn with individual stalls and paddocks. Chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, pea and guinea fowl live in the generous poultry yard with trees, roosts and shelters. In the warm weather, they enjoy splashing in the mud and wading pools.

Throughout the grounds, framed photos peak out from flower beds and under trees - fond remembrances of past residents. Kindred Spirits provides a final refuge for animals that have nowhere else to go. Many old dogs are abandoned on the streets of New Mexico. In some cases, their human guardian has died or become too ill to care for them. Others come from shelters and rescue groups. Because of their advanced age, health problems, and the trauma they have experienced, they were unlikely to be adopted. At Kindred Spirits, previously unwanted animals are welcomed into a community of their own kind and caring humans, where they can feel safe, loved and wanted, often for the first time in their lives.

Wellness care is an important part of the overall mission of the Sanctuary. Animals that have been neglected or abused thrive in the natural and nurturing environment. They are provided nutritious meals with appropriate supplements to strengthen their immune systems and increase energy. Our healthy, calming environment is free of toxic substances, and each animal receives the individualized care that is best for them. Most improve dramatically once they have time to feel safe and benefit from good nutrition and loving care. Traditional and complementary veterinary care, grooming, bodywork and other specialty services are provided on-site. Volunteers feed, clean, and brush and cuddle residents daily. There is a quiet siesta time each afternoon, and at night, the dogs, horses, and poultry sleep well, knowing they are safe, well-fed, and loved.
